Our History

FCC began in October of 1995 with the vision to establish a Christ-centered ministry that would put people and relationships before programs and “religion.” Rev. Vergil Schmidt and his wife, Raychel, in cooperation with the Southwestern District of the C&MA, planted the church and laid a good foundation for its future during the five years of their ministry.

After beginning public meetings at Abel Jr. High, the church soon moved to the Mesa Verde shopping center at the intersection of Neely and North Midland Drive. When continued growth required more space, the Lord miraculously enabled the congregation to purchase an empty church building on approximately 3.1 acres north of Loop 250 on North Midland Drive. This purchase was made in 1998, and was quickly followed by the purchase of an additional 4.4 contiguous acres to the south in 2000. This purchase put the church in ownership of approximately 7.5 acres of prime Midland property on the northeast corner of North Midland Drive and Bluebird (just north of the City of Midland Water Purification Plant).

Midway through 2000, Vergil and Raychel sensed God leading them to assume pastoral ministry in a C&MA church in Red Deer, Canada. Six months after their departure, the church called Rev. Larry Long and his wife, Melissa, to give spiritual leadership to the congregation. The Longs began ministry at FCC on January 1, 2001.

Average attendance during that first year of ministry was 34 in Sunday morning worship. Toward the end of 2001, however, through a focused and purposeful corporate prayer ministry, the church began to grow. At the time, space was severely limited everywhere but in the sanctuary, so new construction was always a goal during those first few years, even though having the finances to do so seemed so far out of our reach.

But by 2003 the Lord lead us to a place where we were able to build a new office and educational building, which was finished in early 2004. A large children's playground, a new church sign, and a large slab of cement for an outdoor Awana circle were all added in the following years.

Ministry-wise the church was also growing during this time. By 2005 Rev. Mark Kohl was added to our staff, and then in 2007 Rev. Micah Irvin was also added. The Irvins came as missionary candidates with the C&MA to fulfill their home-service requirements for overseas placement with the denomination. They have worked hard to start our summer Soccer Camp VBS and our Awana ministry.

By 2008 the church was able to completely retire its debt, which has opened up new opportunities for further expansion. The church is growing and more space is again desperately needed, but his time it is needed in both the educational and worship areas of the church. The church will probably begin new construction by the summer of 2010!
